Asbestos and its Hidden Dangers

Asbestos has been part of the structure of many buildings built before the 2000s. It has been used for all sorts of construction materials in commercial, public and domestic buildings. From roof tiles and flooring to pipework and insulation, it has been used extensively throughout 20th Century architecture and industry. As a result, it is hidden in plain sight within the built environment all around us and if disturbed poses serious health risks. Its use is now banned in the UK.

Asbestos Fibres

What is asbestos? It is a material made of a collection of minerals which when grouped together form microscopic fibres. If undisturbed and undamaged they pose a low risk. But should these particles be breathed in, they cause serious and life-threatening lung conditions and cancer.

Who is at Risk from Asbestos?

The British Lung Foundation informs us that tradesmen in construction, such as carpenters, plumbers, electricians, builders and roofing contractors and painters are those most at risk. Anyone who has worked in factories manufacturing asbestos products, shipbuilding and railway engineering will have had prolonged exposure. Because the dangers were unknown for many years, the families of those workers will also be at risk of contracting mesothelioma, as dust will have contaminated their work clothes.

It can take decades for symptoms to develop, but once diagnosed it is often too late for any treatment to be effective, and about 5000 people a year die from asbestos-related illnesses.
